a story of Vivian 

When Anthony abandoned Vivian by the shore, the sea took pity on her broken heart. 

She waded into the whispering waves at midnight, offering her sorrow to the tide. The ocean demanded payment in kind—three gifts of pain for pain.

First, she surrendered his laughter, which the seals now mimic in mocking cries when the fog rolls in. Next, she gave his luck, leaving his fishing boat to drift empty forevermore. Last, she yielded his name, which the waves erased from every stone and shell.

Now when the moon hangs low, children say you can see Vivian’s ghost combing the shoreline with skeletal fingers, collecting the broken promises of faithless men. The villagers leave offerings of sea lavender at the tide line, lest the drowned bride come calling for new gifts to add to her collection.
